Defining our Industry

Fellow blogger Lenslinger at Viewfinder Blues has a small quote on the side of his blog page. It reads……..

I find television to be very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go in the other room and read a book.

Groucho Marx

It made me wonder what other quotes there are about our industry. I have sampled a few here found on the net for your amusement.

The one function that TV News performs very well is that when there is no news we give it to you with the same emphasis as if there were.

David Brinkley, US TV Journalist, 1920-2003

It was while making newspaper deliveries, trying to miss the bushes and hit the porch, that I first learned the importance of accuracy in journalism.

Charles Osgood

In the spider-web of facts, many a truth is strangled.

Paul Eldridge

If you saw a man drowning and you could either save him or photograph the event... what kind of film would you use?

No news is good news. No journalists is even better.

Nicolas Bentley

Journalism is organized gossip.

Edward Egglestone

Television has a real problem. They have no page two. Consequently every big story gets the same play and comes across to the viewer as a really big, scary one.

Art Buchwald, 1969

Theatre is life. Cinema is art. Television is furniture.

Television: A medium - so called because it is neither rare nor well done.

Ernie Kovacs

I believe that the best cameraman is one who recognizes the source, the story, as the basis of his work.
James Wong Howe

People always seem to assume that we have a full, back-up support team - make-up, costume and a driver - but usually, in a war zone, there's only me and the cameraman.

Kate Adie

The cameraman is there for one reason, to keep the camera rolling.

Mark Burnett, "Survivor" Executive Producer
